How to Repair Windows XP
-
Insert the Windows XP Boot CD
into the CD-ROM drive.
Please note:
Make sure the computer can boot from a CD. If it can't, then press the
appropriate key to enter the BIOS setup feature & set the boot priority so that
the “CD Drive” appears before the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) in the Boot Priority
list.
-
Restart the computer.
-
When the message to Press
any key to boot from CD… is displayed, quickly press any key. Setup will
begin.
Please note:
It is very easy to miss this message. If your current Windows begins to load,
you will need to restart your computer and try again.
-
When Setup begins, several
messages will flash across the bottom of the screen. If you have a SATA
(Serial ATA) hard drive, you will have been provided with the SATA drivers
on floppy disk. Press F6 when prompted & follow the onscreen instructions to
load the drivers.
-
A screen will then appear
which offers the following options: Set up Windows XP,
Repair a Windows XP installation, or
Quit Setup. Select the second option (Repair
a Windows XP installation) by pressing
R. the computer will then enter a DOS
type mode where you will be presented with a black screen saying something
like;
1: C:\WINDOWS
Which Windows
installation would you like to log onto
<to cancel, press
ENTER>?
-
In the above instance, there
is only one hard drive installed so press 1
& then press ENTER to select the C:
drive.
-
The system will then say;
Type the Administrator password:
-
In general, no password will
have been set up, so you can progress by simply pressing ENTER.
-
The system will then say;
C:\WINDOWS>
-
Type the following (including
spaces) chkdsk c: /r & then press
ENTER. Leave the computer running (this
process may take a number of hours) & the computer will compare files from
the CD with files on your hard drive. If it discovers problems with files on
your hard drive, chkdsk will attempt to replace corrupt or missing files, &
will therefore attempt to repair the current Windows Installation.
