How to Reinstall Windows XP
-
Insert the Windows XP Boot CD
into the CD-ROM drive.
Please note:
Make sure the computer can boot from a CD. If it can't, then press the
appropriate key to enter the BIOS setup feature & set the boot priority so that
the “CD Drive” appears before the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) in the Boot Priority
list.
-
Restart the computer.
-
When the message to Press
any key to boot from CD… is displayed, quickly press any key. Setup will
begin.
Please note:
It is very easy to miss this message. If your current Windows begins to load,
you will need to restart your computer and try again.
-
When Setup begins, several
messages will flash across the bottom of the screen. If you have a SATA
(Serial ATA) hard drive, you will have been provided with the SATA drivers
on floppy disk. Press F6 when prompted & follow the onscreen instructions to
load the drivers.
-
A screen will then appear
which offers the following options: Set up Windows XP, Repair a
Windows XP installation, or Quit Setup. Press ENTER to select the
first option.
-
The End User License
Agreement will then appear. Press F8 to accept the agreement. If you do not
accept the agreement, the installation will terminate.
-
If a screen appears showing
an existing installation of Windows XP, press ESC to install a new copy of
Windows XP.
-
You will then be given option
of repartitioning your hard drive. Genner Communications recommend creating
a single NTFS partition for Windows XP. If you want to create a new
partition, follow the on screen instructions to delete existing partitions,
choose unpartitioned space & press ENTER to proceed (please note that
deleting a partition also deletes everything on that partition).
-
You will then be able to
choose between formatting methods. Genner communications recommends using
the NTFS (Quick).
-
Setup will then format the
hard drive, copy the initial Setup files, and restart the computer.
Please note:
When the computer restarts, you will again receive the message Press any key
to boot from CD ignore this
message & boot from the hard drive.
-
Some way into the
installation process, a Region and Language Options page will appear.
Follow the instructions to setup the language & keyboard.
-
You will then be asked to
enter your Windows Product Key. Type in the 25 character product key
which can be found on your computer case or laptop – notebook base.
-
On the Computer Name and
Administrator Password page, enter a computer name.
-
On the Date and Time
Settings page, enter any required changes.
-
On the Networking Settings
page, select Typical settings.
-
On the Workgroup or
Computer Domain page, click Next.
Please note:
You can only connect to a domain in Windows XP Professional (not in Windows XP
Home Edition).
-
Setup will then copy files to
your computer.
-
Your computer will then
restart. Ignore the message to
press any key & after Setup completes, eject the Windows XP
Installation CD.
-
You will then be invited to
activate Windows via the internet. If this process fails, it will probably
be due to your product key having already been registered with Microsoft.
You will then need to choose the free-phone facility to activate Windows by
telephone & confirm that this copy of Windows is only installed on pone
computer.
-
